They both accomplish the same thing which is to get an additional card into our hand at our upkeep and we lose life equal to the CMC
A board wipe is a job, not a card type (here are the 5 jobs) If you treat board wipe like a single bucket, you end up with five-mana sorcery soup
Or in Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded, a 5cmc commander full of expensive creatures, a 3cmc ramp card that taps for 2+ mana like Worn Powerstone is ideal because it lets you cast your commander two(!) turns early and start sneaking out your haymakers
Way back in the frosty era of Ice Age (1995) , there was a card called Dreams of the Dead
Even in Commander, attacking with three or more creatures is not at all uncommon (even more so if youre facing token decks), which means that unless you use it in a pinch for a single card or two (which still makes for a better ROI than your baseline options), youre easily going to be able to restock your hand for minimal effort
